Dementia

2010 April 11

My mother was diagnosed with dementia in April 2010. My father will claim she was always 'a little out of her mind'- and true enough she did struggle to keep up with conversations and think critically / rationally for as long as I can remember (you'll see what I mean in this short sound clip alone). Yet it was only from about 2008 onwards that she began to intermittently speak in paranoid ways about my father, her Greek family and the local Jehovah's Witnesses. This was the cause of much distress in the family. It was therefore somewhat of a relief when she was officially diagnosed with dementia. According to her specialist nurse, it was diagnosed early and as long as she took her medication it could be kept at bay for a long time to come. Of course, she refused to take her medication consistently. That's why I made this recording on 11 April 2010 during one of my visits, so I could play it back to her to reminder her of her commitment. It made no difference whatsoever of course. She refused to take her medication.
